Can porcelain veneers cover up the gaps in my smile?

Absolutely, porcelain veneers are the best solution to cover gaps, chips and misshapen teeth. The thin porcelain veneers are instant orthodontics and will give you the beautiful smile you desire.

Do sportsguards have to be custom fitted?

A mouth guard worn on the upper or lower teeth cushions the blow to protect teeth. The secure fit of a custom sportsguard provides better protection, is more comfortable, less distracting, and there is less problem with restricted breathing. It also allows you to speak more clearly, which is important for clear communication with teammates.

Do you use CEREC for 3D images of teeth?

CEREC is a dental restoration tool that we use when a tooth is being restored either as a crown, inlay, onlay or veneer. CEREC allows us to produce a ceramic restoration using a variety of computer assisted technologies, including 3D photography. The system includes a library of tooth shapes. This information is incorporated with images of your teeth and bite and then we use the software to help design the tooth shape that will suit you best. The finished tooth will look and function so naturally no one will ever be able to tell it is not real - especially not you.

This data is sent to a milling machine where the new tooth is milled out of a solid ceramic or composite block. With CEREC, teeth can be restored in a single visit, rather than the multiple sittings.

CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.

Does Invisalign really work?

Invisalign is a system of invisible braces that works to realign teeth and if we recommend that this solution is appropriate to address your personal dental needs, we will do so with the confidence that it will be effective - we have many patients that will attest to the success of this system with enthusiasm. The transparency of the Invisalign appliance enhances its aesthetic appeal for adult patients who are averse to wearing conventional fixed orthodontic appliances. The principles for how it works to move teeth are the same. If it feels like cheating, well... 🙂

Gingivitis - me? Should I be worried? How bad is this?

Gingivitis and periodontitis can lead to irreversible damage to teeth and gums, and to other negative consequences to overall health. Proper oral care and regular dental check-ups help to prevent problems like these. We would like to be your partner in the effort to safeguard your health.

How do I know if I need a nightguard?

Do you frequently wake up with a sore jaw? Nightguards are commonly used to prevent damage due to teeth grinding. A nightguard custom-made to fit over upper or lower teeth will prevent further damage to your teeth.

How do you diagnose jaw disorder (TMJ/TMD) symptoms?

Millennium Dental is one of the leading clinics in North America for treatment of neuromuscular disorders. We have a lab equipped with state-of-the-art technology which helps us determine if your symptoms are caused by jaw displacement (malocclusion) and calculate what your optimal jaw alignment should be.

We use computerized jaw tracking instruments to record movement, resting position, and path of closure. We also employ electromyography to measure your jaw’s muscle function and the jaw-to-skull relationship to see if there’s a structural imbalance, plus sonography to record jaw joint sounds to detect abnormalities. X-rays may be taken to help evaluate the condition and positioning of the joint.

How do you treat TMJ/TMD symptoms?

If you are diagnosed with TMJ, we can determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs. Typically treatment will follow three steps:

1. Relieve muscle spasm and pain – Our immediate priority is to provide relief of your symptoms. The best way to do this is to relax muscles with a gentle massage of the muscles, increasing blood flow and pumping out waste products.

2. Stabilize jaw alignment - Generally the next step is to fit you with a temporary device, an orthotic, to be worn over your teeth. We then make adjustments to re-shape the orthotic without adjusting the teeth until the bite is stabilized.

3. Permanent bite correction - There are a variety of ways to correct your bite in a more permanent way. Click here for more information.

How long will it take to complete my aesthetic dentistry treatment?

Whether you are looking for a whitening treatment or a complete smile makeover, most procedures can be completed in as little as one to three visits. If you require veneers or crowns, the appointments would be staged so that there would be several days between each, and the visits will take 2-4 hours per visit. The first visit would be for planning and design, the second to prepare your teeth and place temporaries. In effect your new smile will already be apparent to people after this visit – it won’t be obvious that the temporaries are meant to be replaced. On the third visit your new smile will be permanently bonded, polished and adjusted. Total time to receive your finished smile will take between 6-12 hours, and less than a month.

How should I care for my dentures?

You must remove and brush your dentures every day with a denture cleanser or toothpaste and a brush designed specifically for cleaning dentures. If you wear a partial denture, remove it before brushing your natural teeth. When you’re not wearing the denture, soak it in denture cleanser or water. Don’t use boiling water to sterilize dentures because hot water will make the denture lose its shape.

I am prone to headaches and neck pain and someone suggested I should see a dentist; is it possible there is a connection?

Pain in the head or neck or jaw can often be connected to problems with the jaw. Problems with crowded teeth or missing teeth are just two causes that can lead to jaw misalignment, resulting in neuromuscular problems that can seriously impact your health and wellbeing. We are able to resolve these problems so that you can enjoy the kind of comfort that you can take for granted and never need to think about.

If you suffer from ear problems, pain or clicking in your jaw joint, stiff neck or upper back pain, you need to have a dental professional that specializes in TMJ and TMD assess the cause of the problem and advise you if they are able to provide a solution.

I have a sensitive mouth and I find dental work almost unbearable. What options do you have for anaesthetic and pain management? Can you put me to sleep?

In addition to local anaesthetic solutions, we are able to offer sedation dentistry solutions. If you are traumatized by oral surgeries, please advise us and discuss options to make sure that you are comfortable and don't have a bad experience. Please don't compromise your dental health because of these concerns - let us help work out a solution.

I want a smile that I'm not embarassed by - can you accomplish this for me?

An attractive smile is one that is beautiful in shape and colour, with healthy gums. If your smile is not what you want it to be on every level, we are able to help you to achieve the smile that will make you want to smile more often. Have the smile that people will respond to positively, and that will give you greater confidence. Always remember that smiles are infectious – when you smile, people smile in return.

I want to consider veneers but, how natural-looking will they be? My friends of course would notice the difference, but would anyone I meet be able to tell these are not my real teeth? Will they feel like real teeth?

We take pride in the art of designing veneers, implants, crowns and bridges that look natural. We make sure that the colour, shape, size, texture and contour are matched to your original teeth. When this is no longer an accurate measure, or when your teeth are being entirely replaced, we are able to create these to suit skin and eye colour. Most important, we make sure that your new teeth will result in an easy-fitting bite so you are comfortable, and we assure that you will have the natural functionality that your own teeth would give you.

I watched my mom grow older and the shape of her jaw seemed to change, she took on that 'squashed' look - she still had her own teeth. Is it genetic, will that happen to me?

As teeth wear, as they inevitably and steadily will do for each of us, the space between our upper and lower jaw reduces which will bring our chin closer to our nose. This will also result in more deeply engraved jowls and will pull the corners of our mouth down to give the appearance of a permanent frown.

Millennium Dental is able to provide a solution to help you age gracefully. With smile rejuvenation we can restore your teeth to their optimum healthy shape and size, using materials that will not wear.

I'm really uncomfortable having my teeth worked on. How can you help me to deal with this?

We completely respect your concerns, and they are probably shared by a lot of people. That’s why we always try to make the experience as comfortable as possible. We work quickly, we create a comfortable environment and we use technologies that eliminate or minimize discomfort for each treatment. Please tell us if you have concerns when you come in and we’ll discuss what bothers you most and how best to deal with this. Sometimes a little outside-the-box thinking can produce unique solutions!

If I get a smile makeover, is this permanent?

You can expect your new smile to last for many, many years. The materials we use are much stronger than your natural teeth and far more resistant to wear. You will still need to have regular check-ups and maintain your teeth.

If I have cosmetic work done, will my smile look natural?

Without hesitation we can promise that we will create the most natural smile possible for you. We take great pains to measure the proportions of your face and look at the shape of your teeth to determine a style that will suit you. We also take into account your lifestyle, age, complexion, and hair colour. An improved smile will make a dramatic difference to your appearance so we can’t promise that friends won’t notice the change, but we do promise they will admire it!

Is aesthetic dentistry right for me?

There’s no right answer for this question; what’s important is that you must be happy with the appearance of your smile. If your teeth are crooked or you are missing teeth we can certainly create a positive impact not just on the appearance of your smile but also on functionality and this will have far-reaching benefits to your overall health. If you want to know if we can improve on your smile you should book an appointment for an assessment. There is no charge for this visit and we will be happy to discuss your concerns so you can make informed decisions.

What are veneers like?

Veneers are custom, porcelain facings that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. The veneers are only about 1 mm thick (the thickness of a fingernail).

What are your payment options? Can you help me to get my insurance claim processed?

Every dental insurance benefit contract has different coverage and limitations. Our team will fill out any documents indicating the treatment provided and where applicable will electronically submit the dental benefit forms for you.

Payment for your treatment is due at the time of treatment (with the exception of deposits), and all payments from your Dental Benefit Insurer will be sent directly to you.

What can you tell me about mouth guards / sportsguards?

Mouth guards, also known as sportsguards, are a mandatory requirement for all contact sports. Mouth guards can be a thing to be endured, something that causes unnatural salivation, perhaps bruising or calouses, or they can be comfortable and offer genuine protection from injury – the choice is yours.

A custom fitted mouth guard corresponds to your individual jaw dimensions. We create these by using advanced jaw tracking and muscle recording equipment that can identify your mouth's natural bite position. Because of this, when you wear the mouth guard it will hold your jaw in a position that allows all your face muscles to be completely relaxed.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is created by anchoring a titanium post into the jawbone, which acts as the core for a crown or bridge or removable partial denture.

What is aesthetic dentistry?

Aesthetic is defined as ‘pertaining to a sense of the beautiful’, and aesthetic or cosmetic dentistry refers to procedures used to make your smile more attractive. Processes such as teeth whitening, white fillings, porcelain veneers, bridges and crowns all contribute to a better looking smile.

What is fluoride, and how does it work?

Fluoride, derived from fluorine, is found everywhere in nature in water, soil, air and food. It is absorbed easily into tooth enamel, especially in growing teeth. Once teeth are developed, fluoride makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which helps to repair early decay before the damage is even visible.

What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A crown is used when a single tooth is damaged. A bridge is used when more than one tooth is missing. Crowns and bridges add stability to the surrounding teeth and give your smile a more beautiful look.

Why should I choose implants over ordinary crowns?

The reasons for using implants varies with different people. Because they are anchored into the jaw implants are the strongest solution for replacing teeth. For some people, if they don’t have enough tooth material to fit a crown onto, implants are the best alternative. Implants also help maintain a more youthful appearance because they don’t erode as natural teeth will, which leads to the eventual recession of your jaw.

Will my temporaries look odd?

In appearance you will feel like your new smile is already complete. Temporaries are created from the same design that we engineer for your actual teeth but they are made of a less durable material and they are not permanently bonded.
